This project, which is part
of a GSTEP (Georgia Systemic Teacher Education Program) initiative,
has two related purposes: to interest university students from the English
Department of the University of Georgia in secondary school teaching by
providing them with early, structured opportunities to interact with secondary
school students; and to give high school students a preview of the university's
ways of thinking and writing about literature. The project involved two
aspects:
- communication among the
groups
- a concrete product:
The Tempest Book
The groups communicated at
a distance by both synchronous and asynchronous means. The result of their
discussion is a web-published introduction to The Tempest and its
characters that was produced by Roger Bailey's 4th period AP English class
in Oconee County High School. The teachers learned from this pilot project
about differences of curriculum and pedagogy in university and high school
settings. The students, we hope, both learned from and enjoyed the interactions
and their results in the electronic book. We hope that in the future,
similar collaborations will produce other sites like this one, constructed
by actual classes for actual students.
