The son of an Air Force officer, Matt spent his childhood moving among various states and countries. He received his B.A. from Calvin College and his M.A. from the University of Tennessee. Sometimes his fiction examines the interplay between characters and the wilderness. At any given moment he'd rather be one of two places: wandering in the Appalachian mountains, or sitting on the back porch with his wife Gretchen.
