The Franklin College Writing Intensive Program invites proposals from Arts
and Science faculty in
all disciplines for innovative courses that encourage writing. Writing
makes courses
more rigorous, contributing most to higher student engagement, commitment,
and
intellectual investment (R. J. Light, Making the Most of College,
2001). WIP faculty and
students agree that writing courses strengthen thinking, writing, and
learning.
Faculty benefits: WIP teaching assistants support all writing-
intensive
courses
The Franklin College awards to faculty whose proposals are selected a
teaching
assistant qualified to assign and respond to writing in the disciplines.

Writing intensive courses vary across disciplines at UGA, but all make
writing important
to the thinking of the course, give students opportunities to write in low
stakes and high
stakes situations, and engage students in conversations about writing. In
