Josh Cohn was named a 2023-24 Special Collections Libraries Teaching Fellow.

Pilgrim 2.0Lindsey Harding's debut novel Pilgrims 2.0 will be coming out in November 2023 from Acre Books. Pilgrims 2.0 follows four passengers on a luxury cruise line that promises complete reinvention through plastic surgery. 

Christine Lasek-White's story “Mothers and Daughters”  was published in the January edtion of failbetter. 

John Lowe presented "Ernest Gaines’s Struggle for an Ending: the Writing of Catherine Carmier” at the MELUS Conference, Indianapolis, in April, 2023; “Rage and Resilience in Colson Whitehead’s The Nickel Boys" at the College Language Association Conference, Atlanta in April, 2023; and “Displacement, Destruction, and Despair: Sollors and Garcia Revision Refugees, Ruins, and Forgetting in Post-War Germany” at the Modern Language Association, San Francisco, in January, 2023.

Barbara McCaskill led with Sarah Robbins (TCU) both virtual and in-person events titled “The Genius of Phillis Wheatley Peters: A Poet and Her Legacies.” The project was recently discussed in a May 4 Boston Globe essay by Tiana Howard. Dr. McCaskill presented remarks for the March 22 “Phillis Wheatley Peters in Material Memory” workshop cosponsored with the American Antiquarian Society, and will share a revised paper at the Society of Early Americanists national conference this June. For the University of Oxford (March 11), she presented a virtual discussion of William and Ellen Craft, and she published with Dr. Sidonia Serafini (PhD ’22) an essay on the former enslaved Rev. Peter Thomas Stanford for the British Newspaper Archive blog (April 12). In June she will deliver the keynote address for the NEH Institute “Reconstructing the Black Archive: South Carolina as a Case Study, 1839-1895” cosponsored by Clemson and Furman Universities.Book Cover

Adam Parkes presented a paper on The Plumed Serpent at the 36th International D.H. Lawrence Conference at the University of Paris-Nanterre. His paper was drawn from a chapter on nostalgia in his new book, Modernism and the Aristocracy: Monsters of English Privilege, which is to be published this summer by Oxford University Press.

Nancee Reeves won the UGA Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Dr. Santesso receiving her awardEsra Mirze Santesso received the 2023 Lothar Tresp Outstanding Honors Professor Award given by the Honors College. She is also the recipient of the "Study in the Second Discipline" award, which will allow her to work with Dr. Diane Marie Amann in the Law School to investigate issues related to International Human Rights. Her book, Muslim Comics and Warscape Witnessing is forthcoming in September with The Ohio State University Press as part of their “Studies in Comics and Cartoons” series.Book Cover

Caroline Young's collaboration between her Writing for Social Justice class, Common Good Atlanta, Whitworth Women's Facility, and the Georgia Museum of Art culminated in "Art is a Form of Freedom".  The exhibition combines artwork from the museum's permanent collection with creative writing from the currently incarcerated. The exhibit runs through July 2nd. More information can be heard in this WABE City Lights interview.
